Minor Snow

Nov 22–23 · 水 · Water

📅 Lunar Date / 农历时间

Typically falls on November 22–23. The first snow of winter appears, though not yet heavy — hence 'minor snow.'

🌱 Origin / 由来

Xiǎoxuě is the first appearance of snow — though light, it's a clear sign winter has truly arrived. Ancient Chinese believed this was the time to preserve health and avoid illness. The body's yang is deeply hidden, making it especially vulnerable to cold invasion.

🎯 What to Do / 要做的事

  • Keep extremely warm — especially the feet, lower back, and neck
  • Avoid walking barefoot on cold floors
  • Begin making blood-nourishing preparations
  • The body's blood vessels constrict in cold — be gentle with exercise
  • Eat more black and purple foods: black beans, eggplant, purple cabbage

🍜 Traditional Foods & Story / 饮食与故事

Glutinous Rice Cake (糍粑) — sticky rice cakes eaten to celebrate the first snow, believed to provide lasting warmth. Leek — warming, kidney-supporting. Stock/broth — long-simmered bone broth to nourish blood and warm the body.

Story: On Xiǎoxuě, farmers would celebrate the first snow as a promise of winter's proper arrival. Glutinous rice cakes were made and shared — their stickiness symbolized not letting the year's blessings slip away. The first snow was seen as winter's seal of quality.

Modern Wellness Tip / 现代养生建议

Minor Snow is when you need to be very serious about warmth. Your circulation is constricting and the cold penetrates more deeply. Keep your feet warm — this is where cold enters the body. Long-simmered bone broth is excellent: it nourishes blood, warms the body, and provides deep nutrition during the cold months.
